The Balangshan range is located near the famous Four Sisters range in western Sichuan Province, China. There are numerous peaks in the range and we have chosen 4 of the best out of the lot to guide guests on a fantastic climbing experience. All of the choices leave you with a beautiful and breathtaking view of the surrounding province and even down to the city of Chengdu.
1. Balang main peak
The highest of the range at just over 5000m, a technical hike to the ridge at about 4700m with 300m of vertical ascent over grade 4/5 terrain to the peak.
Physical level 4/5
Difficulty 4/5
2. Goat snare peak
Apply named after finding several snares on the mountain that were used to trap the indigenous mountain goats (this was reported to the authorities as they are a protected species). However, the name reminded us of what it means to be in the mountains. This peak sits at 4750m and is a really fun entry-level climb for those new to technical mountaineering. (There are more difficult routes for the more experienced climber looking to challenge themselves)
Physical level 3/5
Difficulty 2-3/5
3. Water Dragon peak
This peak looks like a dragon swimming in and out of the ocean, finally breaking through with its head facing the sky (The surrounding area used to be an ocean millennia ago, with several fossilized remnants). This peak sits t about 4850m and you follow the ridgeline with some lower 5th-grade terrain. (There are more difficult routes for the more experienced climber looking to challenge themselves)
Physical level 3/5
Difficulty 3/5
4. Three ridge peak
Very straightforwardly named, the peak is a pinnacle of three ridgelines. This is the lowest of the peaks at about 4650m, yet it is rather technical and challenging terrain. You either have the choice of going around large boulders or venturing into some traditional or crack climbing to get to the top. It is a very fun route following the main ridge to the top.
Physical level 3/5
Difficulty 3-4/5
